The more of these features exist, the greater the richness and uniqueness of that place. One such unique feature of the Psiloritis UNESCO Global Geopark is its flora.<\/p><\/div><div><p>Inspired by the lifelong work of Georgia M. Xylouri\u2014forest officer in the Forest Service of Crete and one of the Geopark\u2019s founding contributors\u2014we created this small travelling exhibition featuring 20 of the most remarkable plants of Psiloritis. It represents just a glimpse of the region\u2019s vast botanical wealth.<\/p><\/div><div><p>Our aim is for this exhibition to reach as many events and communities across the Geopark as possible, helping locals and visitors alike discover part of this unique natural heritage, appreciate its beauty, and protect it as it deserves.<\/p><\/div><div><p>We extend our heartfelt thanks to the photographers who provided the images, the Natural History Museum of Crete (Botany Department) for their scientific support, the creators of the exhibition, and everyone who helped bring it to life.<\/p><\/div><div><p>On behalf of the Board of the Ideon Network, managing body of the Psiloritis UNESCO Global Geopark<\/p><\/div><div>Dr Charalampos Fassoulas, President<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div><p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2262 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/psiloritisgeopark.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC_0835.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"435\" height=\"290\" srcset=\"https:\/\/psiloritisgeopark.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC_0835.jpg 435w, https:\/\/psiloritisgeopark.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC_0835-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 435px) 100vw, 435px\" \/><\/p><div><p><em>Why focus on plants?<\/em><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><\/div><div>Over the years, the Geopark has hosted numerous exhibitions and publications\u2014featuring geosites, caves, local artists, traditional myths, and more. However, a recent review by our team and collaborating institutions (such as the Environmental Education Centre of Anogeia and the Natural History Museum of Crete) revealed that the unique plants of Psiloritis have often received less attention than its wildlife.\nAs part of this year\u2019s World Environment Day activities, and inspired by the work of Georgia M. This concerned the geographic distribution of each species (where is it found?),its taxonomic group (in what plant category does it belong?),its morphology (what does it look like?)and the type of its special feature (for example: some are very rare, some are very common but simultaneously medicinal, others have striking morphology, etc.).<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div><em>Purpose of the exhibition:<br \/><\/em><\/div><div>The goal is to introduce and familiarize people with some of the plants of our Geopark, with the ultimate aim of highlighting this often overlooked or underappreciated portion of natural wealth. Through this exhibition, we want people to become aware of how many, how diverse, how special, and how beautiful the plants of the Geopark are \u2014 and why their protection should concern us!<\/div><div><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2260 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/psiloritisgeopark.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC_0867-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/psiloritisgeopark.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC_0867-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/psiloritisgeopark.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC_0867.jpg 455w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/div><div><div><em>Possible Threats to the plants of Psiloritis Geopark:<\/em><\/div><div><ul><li>Intensive livestock grazing<\/li><li>Fires \u2013 land clearance<\/li><li>Replacement of wild vegetation with agricultural crops<\/li><li>Climate crisis<\/li><\/ul><\/div><div><p>The extinction risk assessment summarizes the risk of disappearance for a group of organisms, and is conducted according to specific scientific criteria of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). It can be applied at global, regional, and\/or national levels. As a result, species are classified into different categories and corresponding species lists (\u201cRed Lists\u201d) are compiled. With these tools, scientists can evaluate and plan the best possible strategies for protecting threatened species.<\/p><\/div><div><p><strong><u>Categories of the Greek Red List<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0summarized below based on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/redlist.necca.gov.gr\/#WhatIsTheRedList\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">information<\/a>\u00a0from OFYPEKA<\/p><\/div><ul><li>NE \u2013 Not Evaluated: the species has not yet been assessed under the IUCN criteria.<\/li><li>NA \u2013 Not Applicable: species considered not suitable for evaluation at the national level (e.g. alien species).<\/li><li>DD \u2013 Data Deficient: insufficient data to assess; the species could range from Least Concern to Extinct.<\/li><li>LC \u2013 Least Concern: the species is evaluated and not currently threatened.<\/li><li>NT \u2013 Near Threatened: the species does not currently meet the criteria to be listed as threatened, but may do so soon.<\/li><li>VU \u2013 Vulnerable: the species faces a high risk of extinction in the wild.<\/li><li>EN \u2013 Endangered: very high risk of extinction in the wild.<\/li><li>CR \u2013 Critically Endangered: extremely high risk of extinction in the wild.<\/li><li>RE \u2013 Regionally Extinct: the species is presumed extinct in the country, but may still exist elsewhere in the world.<\/li><li>EW \u2013 Extinct in the Wild: after exhaustive surveys, the species has not been found in the wild, only in cultivation or introduced populations outside its known range.<\/li><li>EX \u2013 Extinct: after exhaustive and repeated surveys, no individuals of the species have been recorded; the species is considered extinct.<div><em>Plants of the exhibition:<\/em><\/div><\/li><\/ul><div><strong><em>Acer<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u00a0sempervirens<\/em><\/strong><strong>Maple (photo by E. It is the most common deciduous tree in mountainous Crete, with vibrant green or deep red foliage depending on the season, and winged seeds that are carried over long distances by the wind!<\/div><div><p>Extinction risk assessment: LEAST CONCERN<\/p><\/div><div><strong><em>Astragalus<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u00a0idaeus<\/em><\/strong><strong>Idaean Milkvetch (photo by E. Today, it is considered endemic to these two mountains (meaning it exists only there and nowhere else in the world). It is related to the much more common Astragalus species.<em>Astragalus<\/em>\u00a0spp.).<\/div><div><p>Extinction risk assessment: CRITICALLY ENDANGERED<\/p><\/div><div><strong><em>Berberis<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u00a0cretica<\/em><\/strong><strong>Cretan Maple (photo by E. It is found in various parts of Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean. In Crete, it blooms in May\u2013June, and its yellow flowers later turn into small, fleshy, dark fruits eaten by small birds. It is known for its medicinal and dye-producing properties. Some parts of the plant are used in food by certain cultures, and its wood also has practical uses\u2014but other parts are toxic (DO NOT consume!). Painful prickles \u2014 no explanation needed. The species is not exclusive to Crete.<\/div><div><p>Extinction risk assessment: LEAST CONCERN<\/p><\/div><div><strong><em>Cephalanthera cucullata<\/em><\/strong><strong>Cretan Cephalanthera (photo: Ch. Fassoulas):\nBeautiful, but in danger!<\/strong><\/div><div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2256 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/psiloritisgeopark.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/9-Cephalanthera-cucullata-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/psiloritisgeopark.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/9-Cephalanthera-cucullata-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/psiloritisgeopark.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/9-Cephalanthera-cucullata.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/div><div><div>This Cretan-endemic orchid is known from the three major mountain ranges: the White Mountains, Psiloritis, and Dikti. In 1985, a 2,000 m\u00b2 area in Kamares (Heraklion) was officially designated a Natural Monument, as it is a habitat of the species! This endemic Cephalanthera is one of the most endangered orchids of Crete. Cutting it is strictly prohibited, as with all wild orchids.<\/div><div><p>Extinction risk assessment: ENDANGERED<\/p><\/div><div><strong><em>Crataegus<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u00a0monogyna<\/em><\/strong><strong>Hawthorn (photo: Ch. It features distinctive white blossoms and red fruits that add color to the landscape across the seasons! Hawthorn fruits are considered a superfood, and are used in liqueurs and jams!<\/div><div><p>Extinction risk assessment: LEAST CONCERN<\/p><\/div><div><strong><em>Crocus<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u00a0sieberi<\/em><\/strong><strong>Sieber\u2019s Crocus or Snow Crocus (photo: E. It is endemic to the Cretan mountains (found nowhere else), growing at altitudes between 1,100 and 2,400 m. The name \u201cSieberi\u201d honors Austrian naturalist Sieber, who explored Crete in 1817. \u201cSnow\u201d refers to its blooming season \u2014 early spring, as the snow begins to melt.<\/div><div><p>Extinction risk assessment: LEAST CONCERN<\/p><\/div><div><strong><em>Horstrissea<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u00a0dolinicola<\/em><\/strong><strong>Doline Horstrissea (photo: E.
