Climate Crisis & Biodiversity in Psiloritis Geopark – Outreach Actions 2025 / Green Fund

The Ideon Network, the Network of Municipalities of Psiloritis, has been granted €15,000 to implement the project “Climate Crisis and Biodiversity in the Psiloritis Geopark: Actions and materials for raising awareness in the local community”. This is carried out under the funding programme“NATURAL ENVIRONMENT AND CLIMATE RESILIENCE 2025” (Priority Axis 1: “Protection of Natural Environment – Climate Resilience & Other Actions”) — Outreach Actions 2025, funded by the Green Fund.

Three day Summer Training School Seminar for Teachers Topic: “Climate Crisis and Biodiversity in the UNESCO Global Geopark of Psiloritis: An educational approach for the active citizen” | 27 28 29 June 2025

This summer school seminar was successfully held on those dates, organized by the Psiloritis Geopark, the Centre for Environmental Education and Sustainability (KEPEA) of Anogeia, and the Municipality of Anogeia.

The summer school is part of the aforementioned project “Climate Crisis and Biodiversity … raising awareness” under the Funding Programme “NATURAL ENVIRONMENT AND CLIMATE NEUTRALITY 2025” (Priority Axis 1: Protection of Natural Environment – Climate Neutrality & Other Actions) — Outreach Actions 2025, with the Ideon Network as beneficiary.

 

Scientific presentations and hands on field workshops were held in the Psiloritis Geopark. Our sincere thanks to the outstanding speakers for their thorough and engaging talks, the facilitators of the field based workshops, and all the participating teachers who came from across Greece to attend. Also participating were a representative of the Green Fund, the Chair of the UNECE Education for Sustainable Development Committee and Head of the EPA A unit of the Cyprus Ministry of Education, representatives from OFYPEKA — Samaria National Forest Management Unit / Western Crete Protected Areas & Eastern Crete Protected Areas / Climate Change Department of OFYPEKA, scientists from the Natural History Museum of Crete, the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania, the Hellenic Mediterranean University, the Sociology Department of the University of Crete, the Ephorate of Antiquities of Rethymno, members of the Educational Teams of all KEPEA centres in Crete and KEPEA Mesolongi.

Special thanks to the Mayor and staff of the Municipality of Anogeia and the Psiloritis Geopark, who prepared the venues, the volunteers, the “Shepherd’s Place” for hosting, the Ministry of Culture via the Ephorate of Antiquities of Rethymno, and Ms. Effie Sapouna Sakellaraki for arranging the visit to the archaeological site of Zominthos, the Cultural Association of Zonians for hosting us and helping during our visit to Sphendoni Cave, to Giannis and Giannis, our excellent field guides, the businesses “ZarosWATER” and “Zominthos Dairy Products” for their sponsorships, and to all the volunteers.

Members and partners of the Geopark and visitors, during a hike in the Patsos Gorge, used project promotional material during the 5th Psiloritis Geopark Festival at the 10th Amari Green Festival — Municipality of Amari, Rethymno, on 21 July 2025.

Works by visitors of the Hyacinth Festival 2025 (25 27 July) within an activity of the Psiloritis Geopark entitled “When Nature Inspires” that used graphic material from this project.
