Natural History Museum
The Natural History Museum of Crete – University of Crete is the scientific advisor of the Psiloritis Geopark on environmental issues. It carries out research in the fields of geodiversity and biodiversity of the Eastern Mediterranean, with particular focus on the Aegean and Crete. The Museum maintains extensive collections and hosts several support units, such as a library, GIS department, molecular laboratory, among others. It also serves as an official advisor to the State on environmental matters. In parallel, it supports the educational activities of the University of Crete at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
The Museum has organised a large number of permanent and temporary exhibitions. It has also designed and currently hosts its own permanent exhibition, covering an area of approximately 4,000 m², dedicated to the environment of the Eastern Mediterranean. This exhibition is located in the restored “Old Power Station” building on the Heraklion waterfront.
The Museum’s representative on the Psiloritis Geopark Management Committee, Dr Charalambos Fasoulas, has been elected President of the Board of the Psiloritis Municipalities’ Network "Ideon Network".
