The Climate

The mild Mediterranean climate of Crete and the unique climatic conditions of Psiloritis

Overall, Crete’s climate is classified as continental Mediterranean. Its main characteristics are mildness and temperateness. Thanks to the island’s central position in the eastern Mediterranean, the climate of Crete is considered privileged in terms of moderate conditions and gentle transitions.

Winters are mild, aided by the frequent arrival of warm, humid air masses from the southwest. Summers, on the other hand—especially August—are marked by northern winds that bring the refreshing meltemia.

Summers are hot, with July being the warmest month, reaching a maximum temperature of 30°C and a minimum of 22°C. The summer season lasts from June to September, with July and August being almost rainless. Sunshine occurs on approximately 300 days per year.

Winter typically begins around mid-December. In lowland and semi-mountainous areas, it is mild or even warm, while in the mountains it can be mild to cold. In a small portion of the highest regions, winter is harsh, with heavy snowfall and alpine features. Psiloritis is covered in snow, which lasts until spring; in gorges and shaded areas, snow may persist even into the summer
Most rainfall occurs in December and January. During winter, the average maximum temperature is 16°C and the minimum 9°C.
