Background
Psiloritis Geopark: A Global Model of Nature and Culture
Psiloritis Geopark was established in 2001 as an informal Nature Park by A.K.O.M.M. – Psiloritis Development Agency S.A. O.T.A., with the scientific support of the Natural History Museum of the University of Crete.
Due to its rich geodiversity, stunning landscape, and undeniable historical and cultural heritage, Psiloritis Nature Park joined the European Geoparks Network from its very beginning and shortly afterwards became part of the Global Geoparks Network, thus gaining international recognition.
Since then, Psiloritis Geopark, in collaboration with local municipalities and other competent bodies, has developed the necessary infrastructure to offer both its visitors and permanent residents a high quality of life in an exemplary non-urban environment.
Today, the Psiloritis Geopark actively participates in global efforts to protect and highlight the environment, natural and cultural heritage, and promote sustainable local development through geotourism and other forms of alternative tourism.
